Whilst they're not as showy as the males, the smaller female betta are a popular choice for many aquarists wishing to keep betta in a community tank.. They are a lot more relaxed than the male fighters and can be kept with a number of other species, as well as other female bettas, which is called a sorority. Whilst these females are far more likely to tolerate their own kind, as well as others, caution should still be exercised when keeping them with tank mates as there may be exceptions. As a result, we recommend that the tank is of reasonable size and fully furnished with plenty of plants and bog wood to help break the line of sight and offer hiding spots. A good number is 4-6 females so that there is a reduced chance of any single female being targeted relentlessly.
Tank mates can include Harlequin Rasboras, smaller barbs, loaches and suckermouth catfish. It's best to avoid any members of the Gourami family as they may be viewed as competition, which could result in fighting or chasing.
Female Betta should never be housed with a male as the male will object to her presence the majority of the time and eventually kill the female.
Food can be offered in the form of micro pellets as well as fresh and frozen fish foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp.
